[UPDATE: I have just received this disappointing response. Interesting that he has been meeting the Wildlife Trust and the Soil Association, who have clearly failed to have much impact on him!]
Having being sickened by Owen Paterson’s cheerleading for GM companies in his interview on Radio 4 this morning and as reported in The Guardian, I have just sent this email to DEFRA:
Freedom of Information request. Owen Paterson’s investments and pension funds.
Under the FoI Act, I request the details of the Environment Secretary’s investments and pension funds. If this is not possible, I would like to know, as the minimum, whether he has any financial interests in companies associated with genetically modified crops, such as Monsanto, Syngenta and Bayer (and the extent thereof, if relevant), and whether he has ever acted as a consultant for any of these companies or has ever held discussions with any of their representatives. Details of any such links are also requested: “Where, when and who paid how much for what?” In addition, has he received any offers of future employment by any of these companies?
There is a clear public interest in knowing these things, given his repeated outspoken support for GM in the face of significant evidence of major negative effects on the environment and human and animal health, and the wellbeing of farmers. See, for example: http://geneticroulettemovie.com/ and http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/reports/who_benefits_from_gm_crops.pdf .
Yours faithfully, etc.
Perhaps I should have asked him if he gets his information from any of these groups. They are propaganda tools for pro-GM/agro-industrial megacorporations.
